Secret Tips To Making Your Food Look Like It Came Out Of The Pages of a Magazine
If you’re #foodie with an Instagram account (or even if you’re not!), you know that food photos are all the rage. Everyone wants to post pictures of their latest culinary creations, and everyone wants those pictures to look amazing. Fortunately, I do know a little something about this since I work with magazines, photographers, and marketing people!
If your food photos are looking a little lackluster, never fear! I spoke with Mark Gilvey of Mark Gilvey Creative, a professional food photographer, for some great tips to make your food photos pop.
- Use natural light whenever possible. Sunshine makes everything look better, and that goes for food photos too. If you’re indoors, try to position your food near a window, so it’s bathed in natural light.
- Be careful with flash photography. A little bit of flash can help brighten up a photo, but too much flash will wash out the colors in your food and make it look unappetizing. If you must use flash, experiment with the settings on your camera to find the right balance.
- Get close to your subject. When you’re taking a picture of food, you want to be close enough that the viewer can see all the delicious details. No one wants to see a blurry blob of food – they want to see every juicy ingredient! So get in close and fill up the frame with your food.
- Experiment with different angles. Taking a photo from above is a great way to show off all the colors and textures in your food, but don’t be afraid to play around with different perspectives. Try taking a picture from the side or even from below. You might be surprised at how different your food can look from different angles.
- Use props to make your food look more appealing. A simple dish can be transformed into a work of art with the right props. Think about using colorful plates, napkins, interesting utensils, or fresh herbs or flowers to garnish your food.
Have fun with it! Food photography is all about capturing the beauty of food, so have fun experimenting, and don’t be afraid to try new things. With a little practice, you’ll be taking amazing food photos in no time!
